May 7, 2026 – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Aurora Police Arrest Registered Sex Offender Following Child Sexual Abuse Material Investigation
The Aurora Police Department has arrested a registered sex offender following a lengthy investigation involving the possession of child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
In August 2023, the Aurora Police Department initiated an investigation after receiving information through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) and the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force regarding suspected online child exploitation activity.
As part of the investigation, detectives executed search warrants, conducted forensic examinations of electronic devices, and reviewed digital evidence obtained through multiple online service providers. Investigators also confirmed that the suspect had a prior conviction in Kentucky related to child pornography offenses in 2014.
On April 29, 2026, Aurora Police officers arrested Robert Terry May, 38, of the 700 block of Serendipity Drive in Aurora, without incident.
Following review by the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, May was charged with:
• Possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) – Prior Conviction (10 counts), Class 1 Felony
• Failure to Register as a Sex Offender (5 counts), Class 3 Felony
May was transported to the Kane County Adult Justice Center for processing. Following a detention hearing, he was released under pretrial supervision conditions. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 28, 2026 at 9:00am.
“This investigation reflects the extensive and detailed work required in cases involving online child exploitation,” said Aurora Police Chief Matt Thomas. “Our detectives worked closely with national partners and used digital forensic tools to identify, investigate, and ultimately bring charges in this case. Protecting children and pursuing those who exploit them remains a top priority.”
The investigation was conducted by the Aurora Police Department Investigations Division with assistance from the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
Charges are not proof of guilt. All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
